Merge with Apple?

[edit]

There's only one reference on this page, NPGS/GRIN, that supports treating as a separate entity from the domestic Apple. There surely is substantial disagreement about whether the domestic apple is correctly known as M. domestica or M. pumila, but nobody (aside from NPGS/GRIN) is arguing that one of these names is not synonymous with the other. All of the incoming links to this article intend to target a scientific name for the domestic apple. Usage of M. pumila in the literature is about the domestic apple. I believe this page should be blanked (there's really nothing of value here) and redirected to apple. If there really is a need to preserve the information on this page, Paradise apple would probably be an appropriate title (while WP:FLORA indicates scientific names are preferred, in this case, the title Malus pumila is more urgently needed as a redirect to apple).Plantdrew (talk) 04:34, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An editor just added synonyms (for domestic apples) to this page. As a freestanding article on Malus pumila as something that's not the domestic apple only invites ongoing confusion, I am deleting the content here and redirecting to apple.Plantdrew (talk) 17:32, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@白布飘扬:, please comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants#Malus pumila if you object to redirecting this page to apple. There was a proposal to conserve Malus domestica over the older name Malus pumila, which was rejected in 2014. The Plant List hasn't been updated since 2013, GRIN hasn't been updated since 2008. Neither database considers the rejection of the conservation proposal. Plantdrew (talk) 05:11, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unless I'm misreading something, the name M. domestica was conserved against M. pumila. M. pumila should therefore be a redirect to apple, as it is now. Plantdrew (talk) 03:10, 25 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
